Parents/Guardians/Community Members of the Appleton Area School District:
In 2009, the Appleton Area School District Board of Education gave approval for United Public Montessori (UPM) to initiate plans for their charter school. Students in grades 7-9 were served in the 2010-2011 school year and grades 10, 11 and 12 were added beginning in 2011-2012, continuing through the 2013-14 school year. In October 2013, the UPM Charter Governing Board made the decision to focus the UPM curriculum and programming for students in grades 7 – 9. Montessori students and families were made aware of this new approach and the information was publicized throughout the district and the community.
Although student recruitment efforts continued throughout this past spring and into the month of June, the number of students enrolled for the 2014-2015 school year has declined. At a meeting in mid-June, the UPM Charter Governing Board decided to initiate a discussion with the district regarding possible dissolution of UPM.
After consultation with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), a timeline for action by the UPM Charter Governing Board and the AASD Board of Education was developed. The termination of contract proposal was acted upon and approved by the UPM Charter Governing Board at their regular meeting on Monday, July 7, 2014. By mutual agreement, the termination of charter contract was also acted upon and approved by the AASD Board of Education at their regular meeting on Monday, July 14, 2014. As a result, UPM Charter School will no longer be in operation.
Montessori instruction will continue in the AASD for students in grades 4K through grade 6 at Appleton Public Montessori. Potential options will be considered for students in grades 7 and 8, pending long term strategic planning for space availability and budget impact.
If you have any questions or concerns about the closing of United Public Montessori Charter School or about Montessori opportunities in the Appleton Area School District, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Appleton Area School District offices at (920) 832 – 6301.
